makeing comics and art are two of the hardest things a human can do. its the hardest stuff i've ever atempted, but its so rewarding to literally watch youself grow and see the results unfold before you. its like watching dragon ball z, these characters start out kinda good, and then you see them grow into these ultimate beings of power and what not. thats how i feel when i draw. i feel good. and so should you.
Confidence in your work is the strongest ability one can have. the more confidence you have in your self and your drawing skills, the more it will show in your art. My suggestion for building up confidence is to ink with a brush. that to me is the quickest way to find out if your confident or not. you can tell when someone is either just starting to use a brush and is scared versus someone who is using a brush and is stoked.
The Brush is a weapon that when used in the right hands, brings something out of that person, its a gate way to who you trully are as a person. it shows your personality and soul and puts it on the paper. its a tough tool but with practice, love, and dedication, you'll start to love it because it works with you.
The brush is a tool that helps you build a style all of your own, its like the swiss army knife of drawing tools. i can't stress how much you can do with one brush versus twenty different sized microns or whatever.
so give it a try, i guarantee you'll love the results.
sorry folks ive been in the lab penciling some new stuff for you folks. will show some previews later.
Heres a list of books im reading right now.
Charles burns big baby
i love this book so much because its pre black hole, so alot of the same aspects that are started in this story carry over to that masterpiece. honestly i kinda like this story a lil more than black hole, because its s light hearted yet creepy as hell. you can tell he had alot of fun making this comic. hopefully one day he will do more stuff with big baby.
The adventures of Tintin the black island.
i got this book solely on the influence it had on charles burns, lol. so far im about ten pages in and its everything i like about tintin, and this book doesnt take its time to warm the reader up, it just throws you in the action and i love that.

i am currently reading the following books.
Prophet- this series got me into buying single issue comics again, i love everything about this comic so far. the writing reminds me of old frank miller, in the way that Brandon graham describes the world around him. the drawing done Simon Roy are superb as well. Theres a reason theres a shiton of hype around this series, so if you havent read it yet, do so.
Naruto volumes 1-3 almost done with the 3rd volume and im really impressed so far, i thought it was going to be a run in the mill manga, but its really something of its own. and the fighting scenes make me want to draw!!!
Escapo- Paul popes amazing book, its definently my favorite book ive read from him. the drawings and story are so full on its amazing, this is one of those paul pope books were everything is in its right place, and everything is done to perfection. great fucking story great art, i cant stress it enough, ive been studying the hell out of it.
The new conans are really sweet to, becky cloonan can draw so fucking goooooddddddd.
Corto malteese ballad of the salt sea, just got this in the mail today and i was stoked and not stoked at the same time. the book is great so far as far as story and art goes but, printing is so fucking bad, its like the original pages were to small so they blew them up and decided to print them, all the lines look like jagged bit map drawings done in paint. its sucks that i spent 20 bucks on this but its all good because ive wanted to finally get into hugo pratt after hearing so much about him. id say buy it like i did off amazon, the price you pay is about all its worth in this format. fuck they did such a terrible job printing this hahaha.
thats all dudes and dudets. working on some new shit hope you guys enjoyed everythng so far.

OK all so, everytime im out at a convention i get asked this question alot.
what do you use to draw with? and how do you do what you do haha.
well the how to cant be explained in words but i will show you one of these days, but i will give you a list of the tools i use and how they help me.
Brushes: Winsor & Newton artists water colour sable.
I swear by these brushes and ever since the first time i used one, they changed my life.
I use a Round #2 to do little details, sometimes for really thin line work, a Round pointed #3 and #4 to do feathering and line work as well. the Pointed #4's are really good because they have a nice sharp point and a fat chamber to hold a lot of ink, where as the #3 and #2 have nice points yet very small chambers.
now these burshes are excellent and an industry standard, but they come with a price, the round #2 range $12-$15 bucks, and the Pointed round #3-#4 range from $18- $22 bucks. but anoter great thing about that is there are almost always on sale, go to AC Moore art stores, they usually have them on sale, 30-40% off, or if you live in the Doylestown Pa area, Phoenix art supplies always has a 25% off sticker on all there winsor newton brushes.
due to take extreme care with these brushes, and make sure to test them out in the store before you buy them, because alot of times the brushes arent taken care of at the store or are just poorly manufactured, take a bottle of water with you or a bottle of ink and a piece of paper and do a few test strokes. a good winsor newton will always keep its point where as a bad one will fray and split. look for the ones that have a really nice tip, the ones that dont are pointless and not worth the money. another test is to dip the brush into water and flick it with your wrist. if it holds it point, then its a great brush, if it doesnt, you should do the store a favor and steal it or throw it in the trash. either way your doing an artist a favor.
the life expectansy for these brushes range, ive had good brushes that last a month and some that last for a few months, it all depends on how you use them and take care of them, also what kind of paper your using them on.
i suggest very smooth bristol paper, its good for a brush with a point because it does not have a rough texture that will run down your brush. always remember to clean the shit out of your brush, with a little bit of dish soap and warm water. i blow dry my brushes and try to massage a point in the brush while its drawing. a good way to break in a brush is to dip it in your ink, mold the brush head to its point, and let it sit upright for about a day or so. that helps get the brush used to your ink and gets what ever oils off the brushes bristles.
Paper
The paper I use is, Premiere bristol smooth, 9x12 for smaller illustrations or one page comics.
XL recycled two sided Bristil paper, by canson. sizes 11x14 and 19x24 for my standard comic pages.
i loooovvvveeee these brands because they make durbale cheap paper. the Premiere paper is about 5.99 for 20 sheets, and the canson stuff ranges from about $9.99 to 14.99, for the 11X14 and the 19x24, actually i think the 19x24 is about $30 bucks but theres always a 50% off coupon for michales on the internet or at there store. these two papers ive had the best luck with fuck strathmore, although some people love it, i just dont like it.
ink
Winsor newton black indian ink. WARNING, THIS SHIT IS BLACK!!!!

i love this ink, its so fucking black, which is what you want, you want your original pages to look nice and stunning not gray and old. the only bummer about this stuff is ive only been able to find it 1/2 oz, which doesnt last me that long, but the good thing about it is the price which is $4.12 at Phoenix art supplies, and i think they sell this stuff at AC MOORE, they dont sell it at michales though. anyway this ink is great, its water proof, and sticks to the paper.
i also use Speed ball super black.
this stuff also be warned is super black, but not as thick as the winsor newton stuff. i use this if i have to black in huge areas of the paper, which by the way dont use your brushes for. use a Q tip, my friend taught me this trick, it soaks up a shit ton of ink and saves you so much time. this stuff can be purchased at michaels and comes in a 2 Fl oz bottle for about $4.99.
